What You Need to Know About Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

Have you heard about the newest form of regenerative therapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, and how it could help you manage pain or heal injuries? Here’s our guide for what you need to know about PRP therapy and if it’s right for you.

What is PRP?

Our body’s blood is mainly a liquid, also known as plasma, that contains platelets, red cells, and white cells. Platelets, while best known for their ability to clot blood, are also powerful storehouses of proteins called growth factors that aid in healing injuries. In fact, platelets play a critical role in tissue repair and regeneration. PRP is plasma with a much higher concentration of platelets than what is typically found in the blood.

PRP Therapy

PRP therapy can be effective for chronic tendon injuries such as tennis elbow or Achilles tendonitis. In fact, by combining stem cells and PRP, we help our patients recover more quickly and effectively. During a PRP therapy session, our highly-trained team of medical professionals would collect your blood, extract the platelet-rich plasma, and inject it back into the injured area. The procedure is quick, low-risk, and requires minimal recovery time.

Post Procedure Care

After the procedure, we schedule patients for a follow-up exam to check on progress and to answer any questions you might have. We encourage our patients to talk to us if they have further questions and before taking any medications. Once you begin to recover, you’ll be ready to start physical therapy. If you are interested in PRP therapy, make sure to talk with your healthcare provider or one of our experienced staff to see if PRP therapy is right for you.
