Sciatica is nerve pain caused by the sciatic nerve itself being irritated or its nerve roots being irritated. L4-S3 nerve roots meet outside of the spine to make the Sciatic nerve. Once a nerve is irritated it can travel the length of the nerve. This is how a low back issue can cause leg or even foot pain. Pain can be burning, shooting, sharp. Sometimes symptoms of nerve damage can be painless and the patient feels numbness and tingling in extremities or/and heaviness and weakness.
If you are experiencing any of these, consult a musculoskeletal expert. Chiropractor, physical therapist, medical doctor at the Center can evaluate and provide a proper treatment course. If you experience loss of bowel or bladder this may be a serious condition known as cauda equina. You should go to the emergency department for examination and treatment to prevent permanent damage.
