Neuroprolotherapy is a minimally invasive therapy that targets chronic nerve pain by injecting a low concentration sugar in water solution (Dextrose 5% in water) adjacent to the nerve causing pain. It is used to calm inflamed or irritated sensory nerves causing pain and can be especially useful for chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions. Once the offending nerve or nerves are identified, ultrasound guidance is used to put the solution adjacent to the nerve.
The advantage of this treatment is that relief often occurs even before the patient leaves the office. Repeat injections are usually needed to obtain prolonged relief- months or years. The near nerve sugar water injections were developed in New Zealand by a Dr. Lyftogt. We have been using this treatment for over a decade with generally excellent results.
