Rib Pain

Ribs have three different motions depending on the rib. The upper most 5 ribs move forward and backward. The middle ribs (6-10) move in an up and outward motion. The last 2 ribs (floating ribs) move almost outward exclusively. The degrees of motion of ribs are small when compared to other joints, so when they are dysfunctional or move abnormally, pain levels are often high. Painful ribs can show up as abdominal pain. If you have had a GI work-up including multiple tests and images for your gut that are negative, you may have rib pain. Pain reproduction with trunk flexion, extension, and rotation may be another indicator of rib pain. This is best handled by chiropractic and physical therapy. In extreme circumstances injection therapy can be needed.
